The Swamp Fox Writing Project Announces Its 5th Annual

Langston Hughes

Imitation Poetry Contest

for all grade levels

1-4 grade—Imitation of Hughes’ poem “Harlem”
5-8 grade—Imitation of Hughes’ poem “Mother to Son”
9-12 grade—Imitation of Hughes’ “Theme for English B”

Students need to attempt to imitate the appropriate poem for their grade level, altering it to suit their own circumstances, while maintaining Hughes’ original intent.

Gift certificates to Books-a-Million will be awarded to the top three winners in each age group. These winners will also be invited to read their winning poem at the Writing Project’s annual celebration of African-American Read-In
on Sunday, February 4th at 3:00 at the Florence Library.


All participants will receive a certificate of participation.

Send entries by January 19, 2007 to:

All entries must be typed or neatly written. The student’s name, teacher’s name, grade, school, and school address and phone number should appear somewhere on each entry.


Teachers sending class entries should make sure each student has followed the guidelines for preparation.
Award winners will be notified by phone before February 1, 2007.
