Summer institute at SFWP
The Swamp Fox Writing Project began in 1999 and is
one of nine Writing Project sites in South Carolina. The Swamp
Fox service area includes Florence, Darlington, Marion, Dillon, Williamsburg,
and Marlboro counties. Each Writing Project site involves University
personnel (and University support) as well as public school personnel. Our
current leadership team is as follows: Dr. Beckie Flannagan,
Director (Francis Marion University); Mrs. Linda Dowling, Co-Director
(Sonavista Alternative School, Darlington;,Mr. Matthew Nelson, Co-Director
(Francis Marion University); and Dr. John Sutton, Technology Liaison
(Francis Marion University).
Each year we offer many opportunities for teachers and students
to participate in activities designed to enhance writing instruction
and learning in the Pee Dee area. The centerpiece of our program,
however, is our intensive Summer Institute for teachers in all disciplines
at all grade levels.
Summer Institute 2008
The National Writing Project grant enables Swamp Fox Writing Project to
award six free graduate credit hours
at Francis Marion University to teachers who participate in the Summer
Institute. Interested teachers need to fill out our application
and mail that to Dr. Flannagan at the address on the application form. (Click
here to download application form.) In addition, teachers who
participate will need to make application to the FMU graduate program
unless the teacher has already made previous application. Principals
and administrative personnel can also recommend teachers to us; we will
send applications to those recommended. The deadline for application
is April 1, 2008.
Our Summer Institute follows the National Writing Project
model of intensive writing instruction which includes training in writing
theory and practice, as well as practical applications for that theory.
Participants read professional literature relative to their discipline
and grade level, prepare technology-enhanced demonstration lessons, and
create writing portfolios which showcase the varieties of writing they
have finished during the class. On completion of the course, participants
can become teacher leaders and assist the project in delivering quality
in-service to other teachers in our service area.
The workdays for the Summer Institute 2008 are as follows: June 10-13;
June 16-20; June 23-26; and June 30-July 1, 8:30-3:30 each day. Typically,
the mornings are filled with reading and instructional activities. Participants
are asked to prepare lunch and breakfast one day of the Institute so that
we eat on site at Francis Marion University. Afternoons are spent in our
computer lab, where participants work on their required writing or learn
more about technology from our technical liaison, John Sutton.
Teachers who participate in our Summer Institute come away with a new
respect for writing and writing instruction, as well as the knowledge
to enhance writing in their own classrooms and schools. We encourage
applications from teachers who are committed to making a difference in
our schools.
