Service Learning allows students to put their academic training to use solving real problems in their communities. This teaching method enhances learning through supervised experience related to course work, with goals and objectives that focus on both the learning and service of the activity. Students develop by combining service tasks with structured opportunities that link the tasks to self-reflection, self-discovery, and the attainment of values, skills, and knowledge content.

With a minor in professional writing, Najee took part in service-learning in Advanced Business Communication and Business Writing with Dr. John Sutton. Scientists at the Pee Dee Research and Education Center needed help at the kiosks along the new Clemson Outdoor Education Trail. The goal was to summarize the scientific facts to make them accessible to a widely varied audience. Najee and other students used their professional writing skills to search through the information to simplify and clarify. Each student worked independently on a different kiosk and learned to interact with clients, keep the layout clean and inviting and consider the target audience. The trail website recognized the students for their service to this new educational project. |
