Setting Up a Location for ResNet in OSX

Mac OSX has consolidated all 'remote access' function control into the Network Panel within the machine's System Preferences Panel . To connect to ResNet from any Macintosh running OSX you'll need to adjust some individual settings and set up a New Location within the Network panel. A location in OSX's Network Panel is simply the place where a set of networking parameters and configuration data specific to a network are stored. Macs can have many pre-defined locations for various network configurations and the following steps describe how to create a location for
FMU's ResNet network. In order to make your OSX Macintosh ResNet ready, please follow these steps.

Step 1: Open the System Preferences Panel

Place your mouse cursor over the blue Apple icon at the top-left of your Macintosh screen and then Click and Pull-down to System Preferences .  You will see a screen that resembles the one to the left.

Next, Click on the picture of the globe labeled Network . The icon for this is located second from the left under the heading: Internet & Network

Step 2: Select "Built-In Ethernet"

After selecting the Network icon, you will  see a new screen that looks similar to the one illustrated to the left.

Make sure the words Built-in Ethernet appear in the  Show:  window. If they do not, please click on the up/down arrow button to the right of this window and select Built-in Ethernet from the pull-down menu. Also, disregard the IP Address shown in this illustration (0.0.0.0).

Step 3: Add a New Location

You now need to set up a new location that will contain the proper settings for your machine to use ResNet . To do this click on the up/down arrow button found at the right of the Location window shown in the screen  at left (in this example the window contains the word Automatic ).  Pull-down to the New Location menu item.

Step 4: Pick a Name for the New Location

Once you've done this a screen similar to the one at left will appear.

Type in a new location name in place of the word Untitled (choose something meaningful like Resnet or FMU).

Step 5: Enter the New Location Name

Your screen will now look like the illustration at left.

Click the OK button.

Step 6: Select "Using DHCP"

Finally you need to make sure the network connection is accomplished via DHCP.

To do this click the up/down arrow button to the right of the Configure  window shown in the illustration at left and pull-down to the entry labeled  Using DHCP .

Step 7: Apply the Changes for the New Location

That's the last configuration step you will need.

Your completed Network Panel should look very much like the one at left.

Lastly, click on the Apply Now button at the lower right corner of the screen and then Quit out of the System Preferences Panel.

At this point your system is configured to connect to ResNet.
